What can I expect from a Tui Na massage/ manual therapy?Tui Na massage requires a complex understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and Chinese medicine-based knowledge on the part of the therapist. The massage therapist will apply pressure to the acupressure points and related meridians (the line connecting the acupressure points), muscles, and nerves to remove blockages and enhance Qi circulation. The manipulation required ranges from gentle to heavy force with the use of the therapist's palms, fingers, and elbows. Depending on your condition, Tui Na can be quite vigorous and painful. But strong and deep pressure is sometimes necessary for best effect. The therapist may also do various stretching techniques. You may feel sore, heavy or numb around the massaged area afterwards, which depends on your tolerance and how bad your condition is, but that's completely normal and will disappear in a couple of hours to a couple of days. Please note this manual therapy is definitely not a relaxing, spa-type treatment BUT aiming more for treatment of your ongoing issues.

How do I know if I need a massage or cupping or other therapy? We focus on providing treatment that gives you results so you don’t need to figure out whether you need a massage, dry needling, cupping, moxibustion, Guasha, etc. With decades of experience and knowledge, our massage therapists will recommend and provide the best combination of therapies that will best resolve your problem. We believe a thorough consultation is absolutely necessary to truly understand your condition. Our massage therapists will ask many questions about your health and your symptoms along with a physical assessment. We take our client's problems seriously and do not want to start the massage before fully understanding what is happening first.

How will I feel after an appointment? How you feel depends on your condition. No two people are alike in their health status and symptoms. Most clients feel sore after treatment - this is due to increased blood and Qi circulation as well as the muscle relaxation from long-term stiffness (muscle tissue recovery). Sometimes you may feel heavier the next day - this is due to the detox effect from the increased circulation and muscle recovery. The heaviness will subside after a couple of days, and you will gain better muscle elasticity and better range of motion. We suggest you drink plenty of water and rest following a treatment.

How many sessions will I need?It depends on the individual’s health conditions whether the main issues are from chronic injuries and illnesses or acute onset symptoms. Sometimes, acute injury actually has its origins in chronic injuries that may not have been properly fixed from long ago. Usually to resolve the acute pain, many people feel improvement after 1-3 sessions (depending on varying health conditions ). And for chronic issues, it usually takes up to 5-10 sessions (depending on conditions). However, clients wanting to pursue optimal health and balance in the long term, choose our Maintenance Sessions which are shorter in duration. These include nutrition and physical balancing guidance through overall health evaluation, posture correction, exercise therapy, self-massage guidance and nutritional suggestions.

How long is an appointment?Appointments vary between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your needs. After your first visit, our massage therapist will recommend how much time you need for your next visit based on what is best to resolve your condition. If you need 90 minutes, most likely a 60 minute session will not be enough. However, we will not suggest 90 minutes if 60 minutes is best for you.

What do I need to bring or wear? There is no need to bring or wear specific clothes, however we recommend loose, comfortable clothing (not work clothes as often they are too tight and not flexible). We will be assessing your mobility function prior to treatment and more importantly we want you to feel as comfortable as possible during the process. Our clinic provides all the towels and necessary equipment.

Is there a link between chronic pain and diet? (ie inflammation)Absolutely! If prescribed medication has not helped much, you’ve been in the same or similar pain for more than 6 months or have been experiencing repeated flare-ups at the injury site, then your diet may be playing a part in your recovery (or lack of recovery). Our therapists ask a lot of questions during the initial consultation and, if diet is identified as a possible contributing factor, we will look at finding solutions to reduce the oxidative stress from your body. Refined carbohydrates, sugar, fried foods, processed meats and snack foods have all been proven to cause inflammation in the body. Chronic issues usually resolve by treating multiple aspects and, if your diet hasn’t been considered, that may help you on the road to recovery! Book consultation today to find out!

What does “restrengthen” involve? After treating the acute symptoms ("Relieve") and the chronic problem ("Rebalance"), if you wish to further boost your strength, prevent future imbalances, and maintain or improve your health, we recommend our Maintenance Sessions ("Restrengthen"). During the 30-45 minute session, your therapist will demonstrate several exercise and stretching techniques as well as postural correction methods individualised to your needs. That way, this will help you maintain your health and excel in your wellbeing. You will follow the exercise and/or stretching routine with the therapist while being guided in the correct form during the session, which you can further practise at home or at the gym by yourself. Maintenance Sessions will help you maintain your internal balance and physical alignment to boost your quality of life.
